The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Honourable Abida Sidik Mia, attended the CII- EXIM Bank Conclave on the India-Africa Project Partnership at Hotel Taj Palace; New Delhi, in India from the 19th to the 20th of July 2022.
The Conclave focused on water, project exports, trade, investments, exchange of knowledge and expertise creating shared value for business and industry at large between India and Africa.
In her statement, the Minister said the Ministry, through the Southern Region Water Board and Blantyre Water Board is currently implementing the USD 215 million Water Supply Project funded by the CII- EXIM Bank in Malawi.
She further presented projects requiring financing. Among them, the construction of a multi-purpose Dam on Songwe River.
“The project is aimed at establishing water supply schemes in Songwe Boarder Area, developing an irrigation scheme covering 3,050 hectares and also setting up a hydro-power generation facility to produce 180 Megawatts” said the Minister
Honorable Mia also asked the CII- EXIM Bank to also consider funding some urban and rural water supply projects in Malawi. The Minister further applauded the CII- EXIM Bank for the support and registered her optimism for a continued partnership.
The conclave, attended various Ministers and technocrats from accross Africa and India, did not only set the ground for many new cross-border partnerships to take roots, but also conducted a critical evaluation of the existing collaborative arrangements on the basis of which a new roadmap for future Africa partnerships would be designed.
The CII- EXIM Bank Conclave on India-Africa Project Partnership was launched in the year 2005 with the support of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.
