Feb 1, 2023

Renowned youth activist Lucky Mbewe has hailed President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for maintaining a gender-sensitive Cabinet, stressing that this is key to the promotion of women in Malawi.

In his 21-strong full Cabinet ministers and six deputies released on January 31, 2023, Chakwera maintained a 40 percent of representation of women.

Mbewe told Malawi Exclusive  on Wednesday that he was impressed with the calibre of the people the President has appointed.

“I wish to commend the president for bringing in very new faces who I feel will help drive key decisions towards national development, although we still see some political zealots in it who could have been assigned other tasks elsewhere,” he said.

But Mbewe asked President Chakwera to consider increasing the number of the youth in his next Cabinet reshuffle, observing that the youth are in majority.

disappointment over the lack of meaningful youth inclusion in the cabinet, as Malawi is considered a youthful nation where the majority of the population is comprised of youth.

President Chakwera has reduced his Cabinet by 13 percent.
