Sep 23, 2022

President Lazarus Chakwera has beckoned international investors to partner the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) to work together in financing micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country.

Addressing the first Annual Investment Forum of the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) in New York on Thursday, Chakwera said the door is open to international financing institutions to work with NEEF to support small scale entrepreneurs which comprise the youth and women.

He described the small scale entrepreneurs as very
crucial in as far as implementation of programmes aimed at achieving food security and climate change management.

“In view of this, my government is providing soft loans to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) especially youth and women groups through the National Economic Empowerment Fund. It is my prayer that stakeholders gathered here will seriously consider partnering with the fund to provide affordable financing to our MSMEs,” said Chakwera.

“Those of you who would rather operate your own funds are also welcome to set up your operations in Malawi. What is important is for our private sector to access affordable financing not government getting the credit all puns intended in therefore applaud UNCDF for extending the Build Fund to Malawi in pursuit of these goals.”

Chakwera told the forum that in the midst of global crises such as Covid – 19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, time has come for African countries including Malawi to invest in food security systems.

“It breaks my heart to see how these crises have affected the supply of essential commodities such as cooking oil and wheat flour on the continent when Africa is blessed with vast arable land and fresh water in abundance. Malawi is ready to welcome investors in mega – farms through Public – Private partnership,” he said.
