Chakwera Cancels Plans to Attend AU Summit as he adheres to Austerity Measures, Delegates Minister

Malawi President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has cancelled plans to attend the African Union (AU) Summit meeting for Heads of Regional Economic Communities scheduled for next week in Lusaka – Zambia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday.

According to a press release, the president has decided to cancel the trip to continue concentrating on pressing matters of national development and upholding government’s prevailing austerity policy.

Chakwera who was going to the AU Summit as Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Chairperson has since designated Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo to represent him.

“The meeting will among other issues review progress on the AU’s Agenda 2063, regional intergration and the implementation of this year’s AU theme on nutrition,” says the release dated 14th July, 2022.

Meanwhile, President Chakwera is today virtually attending the SADC Extraordinary Troika Summit meeting on the SADC mission in Mozambique.

“The outcome of the summit meeting will be shared with members of the public through a communique to be issued at the end of the meeting,” added the release.
