Malawi President Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Sunday visited and cheered former Malawi Congress Party President John Zenus Ungapake Tembo.
In his brief statement, Chakwera says the trip was aimed at wishing Tembo well as he is about to turn 90 next week.
According to State House Facebook page, Chakwera was accompanied by First Lady MadameMonica.
“Earlier today, His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, and the First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera called on Right Honourable John Zenus Ungapake Tembo, former President of Malawi Congress Party and Former Leader of Opposition, at his home in Lilongwe to wish him well as he approaches his 90th birthday this coming week. The President was delighted to find Mr. Tembo in good spirits,” reads the statement.
Chakwera succeeded Tembo in 2013 and soon after the convention he delivered a powerful speech from the heart at Natural Resources College Hall in Lilongwe, which was the venue for the party’s convention.
It was a smooth transition and in his speech soon after successfully taking powers from the party’s outgoing president John Tembo, he galvanised the party’s supporters; narrating the party’s great past and hailed its officials, particularly Tembo, for ensuring that its structures are intact despite many years of being in opposition.
Born in 1932, Tembo was one of the strong political assets in the history of MCP. Most people commend him for keeping the party well.
