President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Tuesday arrived safely in Nairobiz Kenya where he among other things attended the swearing in ceremony of President William Samoei Ruto.

Writing on his official Facebook page the Malawi leader said from Nairobi he will proceed to New York to attend the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

“I arrived safely in Nairobi, Kenya where I am attending the swearing-in and inauguration of President-elect, William Samoei Ruto today. From here,  I will proceed to New York to attend the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).”

Chakwera says this year’s UNGA, the first to be held physically since 2020, is timely for his government and the people of Malawi in light of the prevailing social and economic challenges, many of which have their answers in their engagement with the global community.

“This is a working trip as we engage world leaders and heads of international institutions from across all sectors of development. Our underlying goal is to bring from New York tangible outcomes in terms of multilateral and bilateral support from development partners in our quest to improve livelihoods of Malawians,” he wrote.

Chakwera says furthermore, the UNGA77 theme, ‘A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges’, will seek workable solutions to some of the world’s most vexing issues from poverty, development and climate change to peace and security.

Chakwera is expected to address the General Assembly next week Thursday, September 22, 2022.
