President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has pardoned former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner Linda Kunje who was convicted for obstructing a presidential convoy in the year 2020.
On August 19, 2022, Zomba Chief Resident Magistrate Austin Banda sentenced Kunje to one and a half years in jail while his driver Jones Tewesa was given 15 months for two criminal charges, recklessness and negligence after they had obstructed President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy.
According to a letter signed by Minister of Homeland and Security Jean Muonaowauza Sendeza addressed to Chief Commissioner of Prisons dated 6th December, 2022 titled ‘instruction to release Ms. Linda Kunje’ the former MEC Commissioner is on the list of prisoners to be considered for presidential pardon as part of the Christmas celebrations.
“You will recall that the above person was convicted and currently serving a sentence in one of your prisons. I hereby write to instruct you to release the said prisoner immediately,” reads part of the letter.
“I shall be grateful for your compliance and urgency in dealing with this matter.”
