Chakwera request Muluzi, JB to serve as Goodwill Ambassadors

During Thursday update on the State of affairs on Cyclone disaster President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera disclosed that he has asked the former Heads of State Bakili Muluzi and Joyce Banda to serve the country as Goodwill Ambassadors during a Caucus in a bid to lobby for more assistance from their global parters in Operation Tigwirane Manja drive.

The Malawi leader said he has requested the two Presidents to use their relationships they built while in power to lobby for more assistance on behalf of Malawians especally this distressful time when some people are grappling with the devastation of Cyclone disaster.

He said: “The scale and the urgency of the humanitarian need is the reason I held a caucus with former President Bakili Muluzi and former President Joyce Banda to humbly ask them to be Goodwill Ambassadors with a mandate to reach out to their global contacts and appeal for more international support on behalf of Malawian people.”

President Chakwera engaged the two leaders on Thursday at Kamuzu Palace where they discussed how they can work together to rebuild the country in the wake of the Cyclone Freddy which has killed many people and displaced many families and destroyed infrastructures especially in the southern region.

Muluzi was the first President in the democratic era. During his ten-year stint in power he built relationships in Africa and beyond.

Joyce Banda reigned for two years but prior to that he was the country’s Vice President and served as the Minister in various portfolios during Muluzi and Mutharika regimes.
