President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera says the prevailing global crises including Covid – 19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have demonstrated the need for African countries including Malawi to invest in food security systems.

In his speech on Thursday at the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) first annual investment forum in New York, Chakwera said it breaks his heart to see how the continent has been affected by the mentioned global crises when Africa has abundant land laying idle.

“It breaks my heart to see how these crises have affected the supply of essential commodities such as cooking oil and Wheat flour on the continent when Africa is blessed with vast arable land and fresh water in ubandance,” emphasized the Malawi leader.

On this point, Chakwera said Malawi is ready to welcome investors in mega farms through public private partnerships.

“I therefore encourage you to engage my delegation on details regarding our mega farms initiative that are ready for partnerships,” he said.

President Chakwera is in New York attending the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
