President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera says there is a need for African governments to encourage accountability and good governance to prevent the powerful groups in societies from taking advantage of the marginalized and vulnerable people.
The Malawi leader said this on Monday at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) during the Annual General Conference of the African Bar Association.
President Chakwera emphasized that transparent and good governance are the necessary instruments which can ensure that the poor and the powerless social groups are not exploited.
“Socially, transparent and accountable governance is what prevents the marginalization and vulnerability of social groups from being exploited by the rich, the powerful and, the well connected,” said President Chakwera.
The Malawi state President added that accountability and good governance are a prerequisite in the equitable distribution of development projects in every country.
“Developmentally, transparent and accountable governance is what ensures the equitable distribution of such infrastructural developments as roads, rail, bridges, schools and, institutional facilities, power plants and ports,” said President Chakwera.
This year’s African Bar Association conference was organized by the Malawi Law Society and the Ministry of Justice. Deliberated under the theme Instituting An Enduring Legacy of Transparent And Accountable Governance in Africa: Basic Issues and Roadmap, the conference drew together heads of institutions, diplomats, judges, lawyers, academics, military officers and police officers.
To this end, I urge the African Bar Association together with all other National Association gathered here to design and implement educational programmes that help citizens not only to understand and appreciate national constitutions, but to also recognize the law as a tool they can use to organize their private lives and resolve personal and societal conflicts
