As of Monday morning President Chakwera had already polled 67.4 percent of the total votes with Vice President and UTM leader coming in a distant second at 18.9 percent.

Ten percent of the voters abstained from voting for a candidate citing many reasons as to why they would stay away from the ballot.

The other 3.7 percent was shared among Atupele Muluzi of United Democratic Front (UDF), Peter Kuwani of Mbakuwaku, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and Prophet David Mbewe.

Some of the respondents accompanied their votes with brief statements on why Chakwera remains a better choice for Malawi.

“He is still the best candidate regardless of what Malawi is going through. The current problems are not of his making so he still has my vote,” wrote one social media user.

President Chakwera, who leads the Malawi Congress Party, won the 2020 Presidential poll with 58 percent of the votes cast beating Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of the DPP.

Malawi goes to the polls again in September 2025.
