People from the area of Paramount Chief Kawinga in Machinga have hailed government through the ministry of health for a directive to have maternity services offered at Kawinga Health centre which the council has adhered to.

Member of Parliament for the area, honorable Esther Jolobala says pregnant women are no longer traveling over 20 kilometers to Ntaja health centre to access maternity services saying this will help save lives and resources.

“The deputy minister of Health ordered the DC and DHSS that the maternity section must open within 14days, today I am happy to inform you that the maternity wing is now open.” Honorable Jolobala said.

Deputy Minister of Health Enock Phale- MP, last month toured the facility to appreciate Water Sanitation and Hygiene interventions where he noted that maternity services were not being offered at the health centre due to some challenges that would have been sorted at council level.

Honorable Phale ordered the council through the District Commissioner and Director of Health and Social Services for Machinga to address the problem in two weeks so that mothers begin to access maternity services.

According to Honorable Jolobala the first delivery conducted at the health centre was last Saturday 19th November 2022 where a baby girl was born and has since been named after the the deputy minister’s daughter Hadassah in appreciation for the decisive directive leading to the opening of the services.

The member of Parliament writes “Munamenya matebulo mutakwiya kuti zinthu sizikuyenda, zikomo ku mpando azimai onse akuthokoza zoyenda 20km kupita pa Ntaja health centre zatha, NKHOSWE ya amai inuyo.”
