For a long time previous Governments have not done much in terms of development for Likoma Island. All developments were being diverted upland at the expense of of the people from the Island.
However barely few years in office, President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has already appointed Senior Chief Martin Mtambo as Senior Chief Mkumpha.
Deputy Minister of Local Government Halima Daud on Friday presided over the elevation of Phillip Chitanda and Martin Mtambo as Senior Chief Mkumpha III and Traditional Authority Kabuthu of Likoma District respectively.
She asked the newly elevated chiefs to love their subjects, desist from corruption and continue being an inspiration to the country by initiating development projects in their areas.
Speaking on behalf of the Mwase Royal Family, Edward Mungulu commended government for honouring the district with a senior chief.
He said that will help them to work extra hard realising that they are now recognised by government.
This is the first time the district has a senior chief. Likoma now has one senior chief, one traditional authority and Sub Traditional Authority Mwase. While the Senior Chief and the Sub T/A are from the Likoma Island, the T/A is from Chizumulu Island.
