National Coordinator for Center for Democracy Watch, Levi Liwemba has commended Malawi Government for coming up with a pro – poor budget.
Luwemba applauded government for the 2022/2023 National budget as it has removed VAT on Cooking Oil ,Tapped water among others and the complete removal of tax on imported goods.
Luwemba said the budget has a potential to change lives of Malawians. Luwemba is one of human rights activist who once joined hands with Bon Kalindo in holding demonstrations.
Luwemba has since called for the strict measures aimed at safeguarding Public funds.
Activist Bon Kalindo recently suspended a series of anti-government protests due to Cyclone Ana.
Speaking to Journalists in Lilongwe, Kalindo said he wants to give government ample time to support survivors of the catastrophe in Nsanje, Chikwawa and other affected districts.
The comedian cum- activist, has also given an account of gains from his recent demonstrations saying reduction of Tollgate fees, cancellation of a planned 60-day amnesty for corruption individuals, dropping of former Lands Minister Kezzi Msukwa from cabinet as some fruits from the demonstrations.
He has also stressed that government should address some of the challenges facing Malawians failing which, he will go back to the streets.
Kalindo who has faced some arrests recently, has also lamented horrific conditions in the country’s prisons.
He said at Maula prison, inmates are living under inhuman conditions coupled with poor diet, overcrowding among others.
Kalindo has called on authorities to consider maintenance of some old structures at Zomba Maximum Prison describing them as death trap.
