MCP promises to address UTM concerns on Tonse Alliance

Jul 1, 2022

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says the party will tackle the issues raised by Vice President Saulos Chilima at the next meeting of the Tonse Alliance partners.

According to a press statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary Maurice Munthali the party will follow the agreed guidelines by the Tonse Alliance in resolving disputes among the Alliance partners.

“Since the address by the UTM President touched on a number of matters related to the substance and sustainability of the Tonse Alliance, the Malawi Congress Party will follow the alliance’s agreed guidelines for addressing such matter,” reads the statement.

However, the statement stated that MCP does not have the document containing clauses stipulating sharing of terms between the two leaders. The statement further said the party will be guided by and comply with the dictates of the Malawi Constitution.

“Meanwhile, from where we stand, the Malawi Congress Party does not have, in its possession, any document that stipulates points of the sharing of terms between Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima. In any case, as a law-abiding party, we will comply with the dictates of the supreme laws of the land which is our constitution,” said Munthali in the statement.
The statement follows Chilima’s national address which took place at UTM’s Area 10 headquarters in Lilongwe where among other things he claimed that there was an agreement prior to the 2020 fresh Presidential election that after the five years President Chakwera will pave way for Chilima as the Tonse Alliance Presidential candidate in 2025 elections.
