The Malawi Congress Party MCP says it supports the dermacation of constituencies describing the move by Malawi Electral Commission to be in compliance with the law.

In a statement dated 24 November, 2022 and signed by it’s National Publicity Secretary Rev Maurice Munthali says the development was grossly missed during a similar exercise in 1998.

“At that time the southern region had additional wards and constituencies while the center and the north were promised the same with a condition that it would be implemented when funds become available. Sadly, this never happened until this time around. While the laws of the land provide that this exercise be conducted every 5 years, it has taken us as a nation twenty four years since 1998. We strongly feel that the past governments including the Democratic Progressive Party, deliberately and or shamelessly ignored the law and saw nothing wrong with the inequalities that we’re attached to disobeying this law”. Reads part of the statement.

MCP further said that the unequal represantion of the unequal sized constituencies in the country has deprived citizens of their right to development and also placed the nation on the wrong side of the law.

“MCP sees the current decision as an answer to the needs of many constituencies which for years suffered deprivation because of their large sizes. All Malawians deserve the best regardless of where they are located”. Adds the statement.
