Deputy Minister of Health Enock Phale has challenged the medical professionals and Medical Laboratory Science students in the country to be innovative and creative so as to bring about solutions to some challenges facing the health sector.

He was speaking on Friday in Blantyre where he presided over the launch of a Masters programme on Medical Laboratory Science at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences(KUHeS) where he said initially students were going abroad for a Master in MLS.

Phale said the lack of expertise within, the country has for along time been relying on experts from outside the country which is also costly.

“My expectation is that the research output from these Masters students will add to the body of knowledge that the Ministry and its stakeholders refer to when developing policies and guidelines. And all this being done to ensure that as medical personnel, we are providing quality service to all our patients.” Said Phale.

However an associate professor in Molecular biology and acting Executive dean of school of live sciences and allied health Professions Arox Kamng’ona under KUHeS has pleaded with government to provide save for internship to graduates in the medical lab sciences field.

He said, ” We thrive in excellence, that excellence we are actually looking at the development of human capital, as we believe that a health nation is a worth nation, and this medical lab science is one key area.”

Kamng’ona therefore said after training these students they lack hands on experience which can be attained through internship programs and called on authorities to help out, and the deputy minister made a commitment to push for the same.

Malawi has very few people that have specialized in the different laboratory fields, namely Hematology, Forensic Science, Clinical Chemistry, and Cytology and Histology.
