Passengers missing after Boat MV Ubale sank on Lake Malawi

According to James the boat is suspected to have sunk just about an hour distance to reach Nkhata Bay.

Police have confirmed the missing of MV Ubale which was sailing from Likoma to Nkhata Bay Friday afternoon with passengers on board.

Spokesperson for Nkhata Bay Police, Kondwani James said so far 13 people have been found and rescued by a search team and fishermen from Chizi Fishing Camp.

“I can confirm that 13 people have been found so far but we could have more as we are still getting reports that others swam to other shores far from Chizi,” said James.

According to James the boat is suspected to have sunk just about an hour distance to reach Nkhata Bay.

Of the first three survivors to have swam to the shore were two children of the boat owner, Shadreck Mpata.

Commenting on the issue, spokesperson for Nkhata Bay District Health Office, Christopher Singini said so far 8 survivors have been treated as out patients at the hospital, one of whom was a woman.

Further reports indicate debris from the accident has been spotted on the shores of Thotho along the northern stretch of the lake.
The cause of the accident is yet to be established.
