Pope Francis joins Malawians in mourning lost lives of Tropical Cyclone Freddy

Leader of Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis has expresssed shock over the Tropical Cyclone Freddy which has hit the country claiming 225 innocent lives.

Pope has since sent condolence messege to Malawi leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera following the loss of such huge magnitude of people.

“I am close to the people of Malawi hit in recent days by a very strong cyclone. I pray for the dead, the injured, the displaced. May the Lord support the families and the Communities hardest hit by this calamity,” says Pope Francis in his message.

Chakwera, in exercise of powers vested in him pursuant to Section 89 (5) of the Constitution has already directed that the nation observes a 14 Day national
mourning period commencing Thursday 16 March 2023 to Wednesday 29th
March, 2023 to honour the lives lost due to the Cyclone.

All flags are to be hoisted at half-mast for the first 7 days of the mourning period (Thursday 16 March 2023 to Wednesday 22 March 2023).
