President Lazarus Chakwera on Sunday, joined the tee off golf tournament that aimed at fundraising for the military veterans at Lilongwe Golf Club.
Speaking after the tournament, President Chakwera urged all Malawians to go beyond participation and contribution towards events of national importance, but to make a sacrifice just like what the war veterans did towards Malawi’ freedom.
Chakwera said the event was not a charity one, but a thanks giving time for the sacrifice the veterans made to the nation, adding that all citizens must take the event as an expression of gratitude to war veterans for the service they have rendered to Malawi.
Describing war veterans as living sacrifice of peace, President Lazarus Chakwera who is also Commander In-chief of the Malawi Defence Force, and Minister of Defence, said veterans sacrificed their freedom, risked their lives, marched towards danger, and even entered the arena of war so that Malawians would dwell in the citadel of peace.
He then thanked all those who took part in this year’s event, saying they have contributed to the course.
On its part the Malawi Defence Force through Brigadier Charles Kalumo said the MDF has committed itself to assisting war veterans in order to alleviate the plight of veterans at various levels, hence establishment of Veterans Ex-service League of Malawi (VELOM) to be responsible for veterans affairs, while assuring Malawians that the money received will be used to uplift the welfare of the surviving war veterans.
