President Chakwera says citizen behaviour critical in developing the country

Sep 1, 2022

President Lazarus Chakwera has said for the country to attain its 2063 vision, it needs citizens with a new kind of thinking, and a new way of seeing the world, as the citizen behavior remains critical in development of Malawi.

He was speaking at the Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) in Lilongwe during the launch of the Theological Society of Malawi.

President Chakwera told the nation that the country’s broken system in various sectors like healthcare, and substandard work in roads construction is as a result of citizens with broken and substandard mindset.

“As such, if we are to achieve or attain the new objectives we have outlined as a nation in Malawi 2063, we need a new kind of citizen with a new kind of thinking and a new way of seeing the world. And one of the things that has fundamentally been broken about our thinking as a nation is that at all levels of Malawian society, from the top to the bottom, we think that our only responsibility to our country is pointing out what is wrong with it.” Said President Chakwera.

Further, the President said the country is in a desperate need of new things, but emphasized that that can happen only if its citizens have a new kind of thinking towards the developmental progress for the country.

Said the President: “And here in Malawi, we are able to look around us and see a country in desperate need of change. Any Malawian is able to see that we need new roads, new hospitals, new transport system, new schools, new universities, new farms, new trade deals, and new cities. But what is not so obvious to everyone, which is actually the most important thing, is that if Malawi is going to have all these new things we have a great appetite for, then the first thing Malawi must get is a new kind of citizen.”

President Chakwera then expressed his happiness for the coming of the Theological Society of Malawi, saying it has come at the time it is needed to help in moving forward with the right thinking.

“I am therefore delighted that the Theological Society of Malawi has come at a critical time in our nation, to help us move forward with rightPresident Chakwera says citizen behaviour critical in developing the country
