Region 5 Games vital for economic, social and political transformation

These are momentous times because our nations are facing issues and yet the enthusiasm that you all share in these games are contagious

President Lazarus Chakwera has said African continent is full of aspirations and dreams, describing the achievement by Malawi in hosting the African Union Region 5 Youth Games as a proof of what Africa is all about.

Chakwera was speaking on Friday during the official opening of the 10th edition of African Union Region 5 games which has drawn participation of over 1,500 athletes in various sports disciplines from the 13 member states within the continent.

“These are momentous times because our nations are facing issues and yet the enthusiasm that you all share in these games are contagious. We are a continent with ability, dreams, aspirations, energy, vitality, and a continent that values our shared humanity.” Said President Chakwera while adding that Africa believes in unity.

Further, Malawi leader who was the guest and accompanied by Mozambican counterpart, President Filipe Jecinto Nyusi, during the event at Bingu National Stadium in the Capital Lilongwe, said Malawi has been honored to host the games, adding that Malawian people are generous despite having small economy, and that the presence of Nyusi was important as Mozambique and Malawi share many things in common.

Here President Chakwera said he ignored criticisms on the construction of a 10,000 capacity Griffin Saenda indoor sports complex, and the Kamuzu Institute 5,000 capacity aquatic sports complex because he believes that there is no investment in the young people that is a waste of time.

President Chakwera has since expressed gratitude that the competition is taking place in Malawi, saying he has has been looking forward to see it happening in the country.

Said the President;”On behalf of the people of Malawi, I welcome everyone of you to the warm heart of Africa, and I welcome you to the 10th edition of the African Union Region 5 Youth games. I have been looking forward to this day for months, I have been looking forward to see all of you as African brothers and sisters, reunited as one family. I have been looking forward to see our youths demonstrate Africa’s capacity for endurance, resilience, fair play, and victory.”

This year’s African Union Region 5 games which has various sports disciplines including football, swimming, judo, Taekwondo, volleyball and netball, has attracted participants from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho, Comoros, Botswana, Seychelles, Angola, Eswatini, South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, and the host (Malawi), and will run from December 2 to December 11,2022 under the theme “Igniting the African Dream.”
