ROBUST TRANSPORT SYSTEM KEY TO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT-CHAKWERA
President Lazarus Chakwera believes a robust transport system is vital to the country’s development.
Chakwera said this when he addressed a developmental rally in Karonga district after a crop inspection tour in the district.
He was responding to concerns raised by Paramount Chief Kyungu on the dilapidated state of the Karonga-Chitipa road.
“I have used the Karonga-Chitipa road and I must confess it’s indeed in bad state. But this cannot be a reason why we should fail to undertake development projects in the two districts of Karonga and Chitipa. We can make use of other means of transportation like railway and water transportation to fully utilise these two border districts which are the face of Malawi”, said Chakwera.
According to Chakwera even if the roads are maintained each and every year, the continued over reliance on road transportation alone will see the roads developing cracks time and again hence the need to invest in other transportation modes.
“We have the waters here that connect us with Tanzania why can’t we utilise that so that we can have goods shipped from Dar es Salaam to Songwe Border or at least Chirumba here in Karonga?” wondered Chakwera.
According to Chakwera that will ease transportation challenges in the country as well as see a reduction in prices of imported goods and commodities.
President Chakwera is taking advantage of his nationwide crop inspection tours to address developmental rallies in the districts he is touring.
