The United Democratic Front (UDF) has welcomed the appointment of Andrew Mpesi as the new Chief Elections Officer for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)

According to the UDF Publicity Secretary Yusufu Mwawa, the party is of the view that Mpesi is the right man for the position and his impeccable record will stir the election body into the right direction. Mwawa said the UDF is confident that the new MEC Chief Elections Officer will work towards ensuring that the Commission’s activities are impartial

“As a party we welcome the appointment of Mr Mpesi as the new Chief Elections Officer. We think that Mr Mpasu possesses the necessary credentials to effectively discharge his duties. Coming from the background where the former occupant of the position was compromised, we hope the new boss will work towards that MEC is impartial,” said Mwawa.

UDF’s positive remarks follows another one from the Political Science Association (PSA). In its congratulatory message PSA says the body has confidence in Mpasu’s knowledge and competency on electoral matters such that they are hopeful that his appointment will bring sanity to the Electoral Commission whose reputation was dented due to the partisan conducts of the previous office holder.

“As PSA we have confidence in Mr Mpesi’s knowledge and competence on electoral matters and process and the political landscape in the country. We have no doubts that the new CEO will contribute positively towards enhancing electoral management and improving the quality of electoral management and improving the quality of electoral democracy by effectively leading electoral commission to start to support to deliver free, fair, transparent, inclusive, costs-effective and credible elections,” reads the statement.
