Governance and Human Rights Expert Undule Mwakasungula has commended the appointment of Andrew Mpesi as the new Chief Elections Officer of the Malawi Electoral Commission MEC.
In a statement, Mwakasungula said his appointment is a right choice after coming out as a successful candidate following interviews conducted by the commission.
“Mr Mpesi will bring into MEC vast expertise not only as a governance specialist but enhanced trust from the international partners for more support and collaboration with the commission. Further he will help shape and add more value to the operation of the commission,” said Mwakasungula.
However, he said it is surprising that some quarters are raising concerns regarding Mpesis appointment being political and suspicious while he went through an open process of interviews and selection.
“The concerns raised are baseless. Demonizing Mr Mpesi as an MCP operative is unfair looking at his credentials and his professional track record which is above his partisan affiliation. The position and appointment of the CEO of MEC has always been very contentious ever from the era of UDF, PPP, DPP and now Tonse Alliance, therefore these concerns are not new at all,” said Mwakasungula.
He added: “I strongly believe and anticipate Mr Andrew Mpesi will work as a professional to promote the impartiality of MEC and build enhanced trust with Malawians as we plan for 2025 elections.”
