Women continue to shine under President Chakwera leadership

Jul 22, 2022

Women in the country continue to get recognition from President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera as evidenced by the appointment of Mrs Merlyne Yolamu as the new Inspector General of Police

According to a statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet: “the general public is hereby notified that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 154 (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the Republic of Malawi has appointed Ms Merlyne Yolamu to the position of the Inspector General of Police.”
This appointment means that in the new Malawi, women are almost everywhere where power resides. This is a big departure to the follies of the past where women were sidelined, ignored and often overlooked when it comes to the occupation of influential positision especially in government.
Ironically, it’s a rare sight to see that the statement announcing this appointment was signed by another woman, Ms Collin Zamba. This is how far we have gone as a country where we look at women as equals and even more capable in some instances than men. But the bigger picture is that women are being encouraged to work hand in hand with men.
Yolamu’s appointment is one of the numerous appointments of women President Chakwera has made in two years. Recently, President Chakwera appointed Ms Collin Zamba as the Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) and Ms Jean Filipo Priminta as the Director General of Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA).
If confirmed by parliament Yolamu will become the first female IG. In the past President Bingu Wa Mutharika appointed Ms Mary Nangwale to the position but her appointment was rejected by parliament. Yolamu replaces George Kainja who was fired a few weeks ago for his alleged involvement in the Zunneth Sattar’s corruption case.
